Dynamo Awards 08

 

The 2008 Houston Dynamo Awards rolled out the orange to Dynamo Players, fans, and supporters at Warehouse Live Nov. 11.  Some Dynamo Players were presented trophies as recognition for their performance during the 2008 season and a few staff and fans received awards for their dedication.  Honorees were recognized as the following:  Geoff Cameron - Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year for his goal against Dallas; Jorge Escobar and Bengamin Saenz - Dynamo Academy Players' of the Year; Kyle Brown - Reserve Player of the Year; Bobby Boswell - Defender of the Year,  Iron Man of the Year, and Fans Choice Award; Devin Brown - Fan of the Year; Sandy Wahowski - Team Spirit; Stuart Holden - Humanitarian of the Year and Young Player; Brian Ching - Budweiser Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player; Jan Cooper - Forever Orange Award.  The July 29 Dynamo vs. Pachuca was recognized as the Game of the Year.  Attendees bided on 11 silent auction items ranging from a minimum bid of $75 for a chance to "Be a Dynamo girl for a day (ages 10 7 up)" to a minimum bid of $400 for "2 VIP tickets per game (total of 10 tickets) to see each of Houston's five pro sports teams - Aeros, Astros, Dynamo, Rockets and Texans".  All proceeds from the Dynamo Awards 08 benefited the Harris County Precinct 2 After School Program and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

Texas Southern University 2008 Homecoming Parade

 

The TSU Homecoming Celebration held Sunday, November 2 through Saturday, November 8 featured a Maroon & Gray Fashion Show, Comedy Show, an Election Watch Party, Ceremonial Presentations of Miss TSU and Miss Homecoming, Alumni Reunions and Mixers, an Alumni Golf Tournament, Alumni Association General Meeting, a Tailgate Mixer, an Old School Bash, a Grand Tiger Parade and the Homecoming Football Game.  The 9 a.m. expanded TSU Parade followed Metro Light Rail University’s Corridor Route and began on Caroline Street heading southeast on Wheeler Street, and turned left at Dowling Street, right at Alabama Street, right at Tierwester Street, and ended at Tierwester near Scott.  Spectators of ages enjoyed marching bands and decorative cars and floats.

Retirees and Baby-Boomers Learn to Preserve and Protect Financial Freedom

 

Registered Financial Consultant, Alan C. Kifer recently held an educational retirement workshop dinner for retirees and baby-boomers at Pappas Seafood House.  Guests learned income tax reduction methods, alternative to long term care insurance that are purposely hidden, how the IRS tax code allows turning taxable IRAs and 401 (k)s into tax free money, and the lessons of the 1989-90 S&L Crisis that helps protect income and preserve assets today.

NAACP Houston Branch Freedom Fund Awards Banquet

Many supporters attended the NAACP Houston Branch's 2008 Freedom Fund Awards Banquet Friday, October 24 at the Hilton Americas Hotel.  The theme Breaking the Silence...Power of the Voice and the Vote highlighted the branch's recent accomplishments while focusing on the historical tradition of voter registration, voter education and election protection advocacy.  A distinguished group of five including Pastor Kirbyjon H. Caldwell, who received the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award, and Guy Rankin, Executive Director of Harris County Housing Authority, Dr. Deavra Daughtry, President/CEO of Excellent Care Management, Dr. Carolyn Farb, Houston's premier volunteer fundraiser and event creator, and Minister Robert Muhammad, Community Organizer and Southwest Regional Representative of the Nation of Islam, who each received the President Awards, were recognized for their accomplishments and commitments in the community.  The NAACP also had a special recognition of Annette Cluff.  Isiah Carey and Melinda Spaulding of Fox 26 were the Master and Mistress of Ceremony.  Honorary Chairpersons Daniel and Lori Wolterman and Texas Senator Rodney Ellis, District 13 gave greetings.  NAACP President Emeritus Howard Jefferson introduced the keynote speaker and District 9 Congressman Al Green presented an award.

Houston Minority Business Council EXPO 2008 Reception

 

The Houston Minority Business Council (HMBC), held its EXPO 2008 Reception, sponsored by minority business enterprises (MBEs), September 10 from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at the Wortham Center.  The premier event allowed networking between buyers and sellers prior to the opening of EXPO 2008, Texas' largest minority business development tradeshow now in its 32nd year, which provides access to real decision makers through marketing opportunities and direct exposure to suppliers.
